GOGLA Report - Solar Power Brings Economic Boost to East African Households

This new report from GOGLA brings positive news that households using small scale-solar power in East Africa are reporting a rise in economic activity, with improvement in income and job opportunities. It demonstrates the economic benefits of off-grid solar power in the developing world.

With funding from the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), researchers were able to collect and analyse data from over 2300 new off-grid solar users in Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda.

Key Findings:

  • Nearly 60% of off-grid solar customers undertook more economic activity within just 3 months of purchasing a solar home system (SHS)
  • After 3 months 36% of households are already generating more income - on average by $35
  • 94% of households report their SHS has improved their quality of life
