Water Saving Tips

Britain has been experiencing unusually high temperatures and they seem set to continue for a while yet.  Water shortages are being reported across the UK and Ireland and people are being urged to conserve water as the heatwave continues.

Here are some top tips for using less.

  • Fill a jug with water and keep it in the fridge. This gives you quick access to cold water rather than running the tap until the water is sufficiently cool.
  • Take a shower. The average bath uses 40 litres more water than a shower. Reduce your time in there too – a minute less can make a difference.
  • If you have a dripping tap, get it fixed. A tap dripping every second, all day, will waste around 17 litres in 24hrs.
  • Avoid using the hosepipe. Use a bucket & sponge to wash the car. Use a watering can to water your plants.
  • Wash fruit and veg in a bowl rather than leave the tap running. You can then use the water for the garden.
  • Make sure the tap is turned off when brushing your teeth. This can save 6 litres of water per minute you spend brushing your teeth.
  • Wait until your washing machine is full before turning it on. Settings for half loads use more than half the water and energy.
