Universal Children's Day - 20th November

Established by the United Nations (UN) in 1954, Universal Children's Day aims to promote the welfare of children everywhere and to encourage understanding between children all over the world. It is also the day when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.

UNICEF promotes and coordinates this special day, which also works towards improving children's welfare. They have released a report today titled ‘For every child, a fair chance: The promise of equity,’ which builds on evidence and experience from UNICEF’s focus on reaching the most vulnerable children. The report highlights the stark contrast between global progress on one hand and the urgent needs of the world’s most vulnerable on the other. Anthony Lake, Executive Director, says ‘As the world embarks on the path to the Sustainable Development Goals, investing in children – particularly the poorest and most disadvantaged children – is the right thing to do. It’s the smart thing to do.’

Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General, said in his annual message ‘The United Nations is preparing a Global Study that aims to shine a light on the scale and conditions of children deprived of their liberty and secure the protection of their rights. The study will gather relevant data, identify good practices and help countries grasp the worrisome magnitude of the phenomenon and design measures to address it.’ He went on to add ‘On Universal Children's Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to a future in which no child is left behind, including those deprived of their liberty.’
