Project India

Project India

DelAgua has worked in partnership with state governments under the National Rural Drinking Water Programme of the Government of India, to design, implement and manage large scale water testing programmes.

Each programme is bespoke and can be designed to utilise a range of testing technologies. The system offers real time reporting of results through smartphones and sensors which significantly speeds up identification of contaminated sources, enables rapid remedial action to prevent people drinking unsafe water and greatly increases accountability in water testing reporting.

Water Sources

With millions of drinking water sources spread across India, identifying unsafe points in order to prioritise action is a huge task. In 2012 alone, the Ministry of Health reported 11.7million cases of acute watery diarrhoea (AWD) & over 1,600 deaths, usually associated with unsafe drinking water, lack of sanitation and poor hygiene.

Remote Reporting

Innovative testing and paperless real-time reporting systems makes analysing water sources faster than ever, meaning that remedial action and feedback to communities can be provided within 24 hours. Results can be uploaded to the smartphone application and processed in a cloud server meaning graphical data is available immediately on the live-feed dashboard.

We employ a team of local staff to assist with setting up the project followed by the day to day implementation. Training a local team is a crucial asset to the success of the project.

Project Benefits

DelAgua prefers to not just supply high quality water testing equipment, but to also work in partnership with the government to provide training and ongoing project support and coordination. As each State has different water quality challenges and focus areas, DelAgua is able to work with all partners/stakeholders to create bespoke programmes and solutions with the following benefits:

  • Increase coverage and reach of water testing through mobile laboratories.
  • Improve speed of water quality testing meaning more water sources can be tested within the same time frame.
  • Up the speed of reporting results by reducing paper systems and replacing them with smartphones, equipped with DelAgua’s custom data collection application.
  • Smart sensors report key errors in real time through the cell phone networks, increasing accuracy and confidence in results.
  • Enhance responsiveness to unsafe water by reporting online and allowing downloads in real time - leading to quicker remedial action and reduced water related sickness and deaths.
  • Promoting community awareness - testing being conducted in the communities helps education and the communication component of Government initiatives.

Home to Over 90 Million People

DelAgua worked with the Public Health & Engineering Department (PHED) of West Bengal under their Vision 2020 initiative and in collaboration with the Water and Sanitation Support Organization(WSSO) between 2014 – 2017. Vision 2020 aims to provide a safe, sustainable and adequate water supply to everyone in West Bengal by 2020. Regulations require that every rural public drinking water source be tested once per year for chemical parameters and twice per year for microbiological parameters.

DelAgua coordinated the implementation of a large scale water quality testing programme across all 18 districts of West Bengal state, which is home to over 90 million people. DelAgua employed and trained a team of staff to assist with the set up the project followed by the day to day running.

The DelAgua On-Site Mobile Analysis System encompasses essential bacteriological, physical and chemical test parameters along with sanitary surveys, which permit both assessment of the safety of drinking water and monitors the efficiency of water treatment and purification processes. By installing the system the programme can reach even the most remote areas across the State.

The parameters that are tested for are:

  • Total Coliforms
  • Thermotolerant Coliforms
  • pH
  • Temperature
  • Conductivity
  • TDS
  • Turbidity
  • Arsenic
  • Fluoride
  • Chlorine: Free, Combined and Total
  • Iron
  • Manganese
  • Total Hardness
