World Environment Day 2018

World Environment Day is the UN's most important day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. Each World Environment Day is organised around a theme that focuses attention on a particularly pressing environmental concern.

Every World Environment Day has a different global host country, where the official celebrations take place. The focus on the host country helps highlight the environmental challenges it faces, and supports the effort to address them. This year's host is India.

The theme this year is 'Beat Plastic Pollution'. It invites us all to consider how we can make changes in our everyday life to reduce plastic use. Around the world 1 million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute. Each year we use up to 5 trillion disposable plastic bags. In total, 50% of the plastic we use is single use.

The day encourages us all to embrace the manys ways we can help combat plastic pollution.
